Ian MacLellan is a Portland, Maine-based filmmaker who creates documentary-style videos to tell brand and non-profit stories. Ian can handle every aspect of a campaign to bring your idea to life as a film.

Video Process
1. Pre-Production
I enjoy learning about new industries, scientific fields, or development strategies. We will work together to identify your video goals and audience and then craft a story, write the script, and plan videos to achieve that vision. I’ll build and hire the right team to collaborate to create your film and photographs.
3. Editing + Post-Production
Editing is where the real magic starts. We will collaborate throughout the editing process to craft the best version of the story we captured during filming, ensuring it aligns with your objectives. I’ll coordinate communication with any applicable composers, designers, or colorists. Most projects don’t just have one final video, and I’m always happy to work on projects with multiple story cutdowns and social media edits.
2. Filming
During filming, we will capture everything needed to tell your story, including excellent sounds, engaging visuals, and the voice that brings it all together. Some projects can be filmed in a few hours, while others may take a few weeks. I’ll handle all the logistics to ensure the right camera, lighting, and audio recording equipment are used.
4. Delivery
I will create and deliver the best versions of the edit for different platforms, so that you have a series of easy-to-share videos to reach your audience.

Director of Photography Work
2025 Courageous Sailing
I was the DP for director and editor Luke Boelitz on this 2025 Courageous Sailing video. I filmed on an FX6 and FX3, as well as with an underwater housing in the pool and DJI Air 3s drone.
Mohonk Mountain House Via Ferrata
I was hired by Groundswell Media Lab to film and fly drones for photography to document a pair of new via ferratas at the Mohonk Mountain House.
UMass Amherst
I’ve worked with UMass since 2017 to share stories of successful students, faculty, and alumni.
Alumni Honors Awards 2021 – 2022
After COVID-19 cancelations, UMass decided to transition their alumni awards from an in-person event in Boston to an online celebration featuring stories and testimonials on a diverse group of graduates. I put together a team to film interviews and B-roll with each subject and then edited it all into a longer event video and individual videos for web usage.

Adventures
Mahoosuc Traverse for Scarpa
I collaborated with Scarpa-athlete, Hillary Gerardi, to photograph and film her reconnaissance run of the Mahoosuc Traverse to create shareable content for her FKT attempt. The rules of the FKT didn’t allow for any documentation of the run so this was our best opportunity to capture her on the route.
Packraft Maine Car-Free Adventure
I photographed and filmed a car-free trip bike and rafting, setting out from my house in Portland and ending up rafting the Penobscot River. Any day involving both filming from a moving bike and getting to use my underwater housing is a good day in my book.
A Run with Patrick Caron
I love filming running with a gimbal.
Documentaries
I love following interesting people and stories and enjoy the slower process of creating documentaries.
Around the Cove: A Backyard Ultra Film
I filmed this running documentary with Noah Keates in Portland, ME.
Morning Glory for Maine Street USA
For the Maine Street USA film festival, I collaborated with Dylan Ladds to create a short profile video on Morning Glory in Brunswick, ME.
Dooster Collaborations
I share an office with Dylan Ladds of Dooster and we frequently collaborate. We’ve done equal parts multi-camera interviews and running in the mountains filming together. These are projects I helped film for Dooster but did not direct, produce, or edit.
I filmed the Chamonix and UTMB sections with Tim.
